Work Based Animal Care - Level 1 Diploma

If you’ve always dreamed about working with animals, then this course is perfect for you!

It’s taught at our Middleton Campus located in Greater Manchester. Under the guidance of expert tutors who have worked in zoos across the world, you’ll have the amazing opportunity to get hands-on experience with some of the planet’s most rare and wonderful wildlife.

We home over 700 animals, many of which are categorised as endangered species. Just some of the unique creatures you’ll learn about and care for include wallabies, pink flamingos, meerkats, potoroos and many more!

Every day has the potential to be an adventure. You’ll sometimes find yourself working indoors with exotic reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish, whereas on other days you’ll be in the great outdoors as you work from our vast animal enclosures. It’s here where you’ll also find our Tropical House.

This Level 1 qualification is ultimately designed to provide you with a range of practical skills, knowledge and understanding. You’ll finish the course having mastered the basics of working with animals, which will then open a number of exciting doors for you.

While you’ll have the grounding to enter the workforce after one year, you’ll also have the option to progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Work Based Animal Care and continue with the next level of study.

Entry Requirements

Minimum GCSE grade 1 in English and Maths

You'll study a wide range of units which are designed to give you the perfect foundation for a career working with animals.

The below units are a mixture of practical and theory-based training - meaning upon completion you'll be well served to gain employment in the animal care industry or progress to further specialist study.

Unit 101: Maintain the safety of self and others in the workplace

Unit 102: Assist with the care of animals

Unit 103: Principles of the care of animals

Unit 104: Principles of dealing with animal accommodation

Unit 105: Assist with animal accommodation

Unit 108: Assist with the movement and handling of farm animals

Unit 109: Principles of the movement and handling of farm animals

Unit 110: Principles of dealing with feedstuffs for small animals

Unit 111: Assist with feedstuffs for small animals

Work Experience

You can expect to get a one-of-a-kind experience when you're working with the animals at the Middleton Campus.

Due to the fact that we have such a wide variety of exotic creatures, it's quite possible that you'll come to find your specialism - which could be working with domestic animals like cats and dogs or working with animals that you'd typically find in the wild.

Ultimately, you might find that this qualification sets you up to gain work experience or employment in a range of roles before the course concludes, such as at a kennel, cattery, pet store, wildlife centre or similar business.

Progression

The natural progression for this course is to advance onto the Level 2 Certificate in Work Based Animal Care.

However, you will have numerous other options - including going into employment or dojng an apprenticeship which would allow you to combine work and study.
